Using the Track Changes option in Word
You can view the edited manuscript in several ways. To start, open the Reviewing toolbar (in the "View" pull-down menu, "Toolbars", "Reviewing"). Select "Final Showing Markup." If you then select "Print Layout" (in the "View" menu), my comments will appear in balloons to the right of the text and other changes will be noted in the text or to the right of the text. But balloons with comments will not appear if you select "Normal" in the "View" menu. Also, balloons will not appear unless you have selected "Balloons" under "Tools", "Options", "Track Changes."
Here is another way to view the comments: open the Reviewing toolbar (View, Toolbars, Reviewing) and select "Show Reviewing Pane." In this case, the comments (but not deletions and insertions) will appear in a window at the bottom of the monitor.
In addition to sending an edited Word file, I can also send a pdf file with comments and corrections in place. No access to or understanding of Tracking is needed to see the comments in the pdf file.
When you receive the edited file, I suggest saving it under two file names. Keep one as the original and use the other for additional changes. Also remember that all my comments and other notations will be lost if you select the "accept changes" option under "Tracking changes" (that's why an unaltered original may be useful).
