in vs into ...

 

Use in to indicate position:

The fish are in the stream.

 

Use into to indicate movement:

The fish are moving into the stream.

 

I assume that you would pipet the acid into the sample rather than in the sample.

 

On the other hand, would you place the sample into the refrigerator or in the refrigerator?

I would place the sample in the refrigerator because the verb place is already indicating movement.
